Toxins, Avoidance and Detoxification

Over the past 70 years, the production and utilization of toxic chemicals have become increasingly prevalent in our daily lives. Presently, the US boasts a staggering inventory of over 85,000 chemicals in active use, with an additional 2,000 chemicals introduced each year. These substances permeate our surroundings, and regrettably, we unwittingly absorb significant quantities of them annually through the consumption of food and beverages, exposure to skincare and household products, and the medications we ingest. Unfortunately, our medical system has fallen short in alerting individuals to the detrimental impact these toxins pose to their health and well-being, jeopardizing not only their own vitality but also the health of future generations.

The umbilical cord blood serves as a vital lifeline for a baby, delivering essential nourishment and oxygen from the mother while simultaneously eliminating waste and toxins from the developing body. Shockingly, studies analyzing umbilical cord blood have identified a concerning array of chemicals. Among these, 287 chemicals were detected, with alarming implications: 180 are known to induce cancers in humans or animals, 217 exhibit toxicity to the brain or nervous system, and 208 have been linked to birth defects or abnormal development in animals. These findings underscore the urgent need for heightened awareness and action to mitigate prenatal exposure to harmful substances.

CHEMICAL TOXINS ARE LINKED TO A GROWING LIST OF CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS AND DISEASES, INCLUDING:

  1. Damage to genetic material within the nucleus of each cell, including DNA, which may lead to long-term epigenetic changes. These alterations can result in inheritable defects that are passed on to subsequent generations.

  2. Birth defects and developmental disorders, such as Autism, PDD NOS, ADD, and ADHD, alongside impaired mental development, poor memory, lower IQ, and associated learning disabilities.

  3. Central and peripheral nerve damage, compromising both sensory and motor functions and potentially leading to neurological disorders.

  4. Disruption and dysfunction of the immune system, leaving individuals more susceptible to infections, autoimmune conditions, and other immune-related disorders.

  5. Increased risk of cancer due to the carcinogenic properties of certain chemical toxins, which can trigger mutations and aberrant cell growth.

  6. Impaired fertility, affecting both males and females, and potentially leading to difficulties in conceiving or maintaining a pregnancy.

We know the developing fetus is one of the most vulnerable populations, if not the most vulnerable, to environmental exposure. Their organ systems aren’t mature and their detox methods are not in place, so cord blood gives us a good picture of exposure during this most vulnerable time of life.

It is absolutely vital to reduce exposures to toxins if you are hoping to become pregnant.

PRECONCEPTION

Heavy Metal & Cellular Detox.

Heavy metal burden and cellular toxicity is commonly elevated in individuals today as a result of frequent exposure in our current world. Exposure, along with reduced levels of glutathione and metallothionein, can substantially impair the body’s natural ability to rid the system of these poisons. It is crucial that these are removed as much as possible prior to conception.

Practical Steps

While it's impossible to completely eliminate exposure to environmental toxins, there are steps you can take to minimize your risk:

  1. Opt for organic produce and food products whenever possible to reduce exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals commonly used in conventional farming practices.

  2. Invest in a high-quality water filter to remove contaminants such as chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and pesticides from your tap water.

  3. If you smoke, use drugs, or consume alcohol, consider quitting or reducing your intake to limit exposure to harmful substances.

  4. Choose personal hygiene products, toiletries, and cosmetics from reputable brands that avoid ingredients like triclosan, phthalates, and sodium laurel sulfate, which can be harmful to health.

  5. Use biodegradable cleaning products instead of harsh chemicals for indoor and outdoor cleaning tasks to minimize exposure to hazardous substances.

  6. Be cautious about consuming fish high in mercury or PCBs, such as tuna, cod, and salmon, and opt for smaller oily fish like sardines and sprats instead.

  7. Avoid artificial food additives, sweeteners, colorings, and flavorings, as well as chemicals used in food packaging and storage materials.

  8. Steer clear of products containing chloro chemicals, which are often found in wood preservatives, herbicides, and insecticides.

  9. Choose alternative materials to store and wrap food, avoiding tins, PVC, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, and Styrofoam, which can leach harmful chemicals into food.

  10. Minimize exposure to artificial fragrances and chemicals found in air fresheners, scented candles, fabric softeners, and dryer sheets.

  11. Opt for furniture fabrics and mattresses that are Greenguard certified to reduce exposure to flame retardants and other chemicals commonly found in furnishings.

  12. Reduce the use of plastic products containing bisphenol A, phthalates, and other harmful chemicals by choosing alternatives made from safer materials.

  13. Avoid non-stick cookware containing PFOA and opt for safer alternatives to minimize the risk of chemical exposure during cooking.

  14. Be mindful of formaldehyde exposure from manufactured wood products, glues, and adhesives commonly found in furniture and building materials, and choose formaldehyde-free options whenever possible.

Detoxing your body before pregnancy

Physicians, naturopaths, dieticians, and other practitioners often consider a person’s accumulation of all toxins in all organ systems. Standard blood tests can be entirely normal even in the presence of a high total body burden of toxins.  This is why many people go from doctor to doctor with various health problems, yet find no answers because their healthcare providers have not ruled out exposure to toxins.

We understand that this is a comprehensive list, but it's crucial to remember that chemicals cannot be utilized by the body. They exert harm by disrupting numerous bodily functions, often with carcinogenic effects and depletion of essential nutrients. Ultimately, they pose a threat to your fertility journey, your overall health, and the well-being of your future child.
