The First 40 Days

In the journey of motherhood, the first 40 days postpartum hold profound significance. This period, often referred to as the "sacred window," is a time of transition, renewal, and immense physical and emotional transformation. From the holistic practitioner's standpoint, honoring the sanctity of these initial weeks is paramount for the well-being of both mother and child.

Rest, Restoration, and Renewal

At the heart of this sacred period lies the essential need for rest. Pregnancy and childbirth exert tremendous strain on a woman's body, depleting her physical and emotional reserves. Hence, postpartum rest is not merely a luxury but a necessity for healing and rejuvenation.

Restorative practices during the first 40 days allow the body to recover from childbirth. By prioritizing ample sleep, reduced movement, and minimizing stressors, mothers can foster a nurturing environment conducive to healing. This intentional rest serves as a cornerstone for long-term health and vitality, laying the foundation for the journey of motherhood ahead.

Embracing rest during this period honors the wisdom that acknowledges the significance of transition. By acknowledging the sacredness of this phase, mothers can cultivate a deeper connection with their newborns.

We highly recommend the following guidelines as a minimum for the first 15 days postpartum:

  • Spend the initial 5 days in bed with your baby. It is of utmost importance to prioritize the mother's well-being through ample rest, nourishment, and bonding time with the newborn. Focus on plenty of sleep, fostering a strong connection between mother and baby through skin-to-skin contact, ensuring successful breastfeeding, and allowing the mother's body to heal. The only exception for leaving the bed should be for essential bathroom breaks.

  • Allocate the subsequent 5 days to be spent primarily on the bed. During this phase, embrace sitting up in bed to engage with your baby, indulge in your favorite activities such as watching movies or reading good books, and continue to nourish your body with wholesome foods. This period offers extended opportunities for bonding with your baby and further establishing the breastfeeding relationship.

  • Dedicate the final 5 days to activities around or near the bed. While still maintaining a close proximity to rest, engage in light stretching exercises with your baby or enjoy brief moments outdoors to soak up natural sunlight and rejuvenate. This phase allows for gentle reintroduction to light activities while prioritizing continued rest and recovery.

After this period, you can slowly graduate to enjoying small activities around the house, slow and short walks outside, and spending time with the rest of your family. Ensure that you listen to your body, eliminate hurry, and prioritize healing.

We recognize that adhering to these recommendations may present challenges in certain family dynamics, particularly for families with older children. However, it is crucial not to underestimate the profound importance of this dedicated time for both mother and baby. These first 15-40 days have the potential to be transformative, laying the groundwork for a strong and healthy bond between mother and child that can positively impact their lives in profound ways.

In tandem with rest, nourishment plays a pivotal role in postpartum recovery. You can read all about how to effectively nourish your body in our nourishment tab of the postpartum section. In short, traditional wisdom from various cultures emphasizes the importance of warming, nutrient-rich foods during this delicate phase. Warming foods, such as soups, stews, and herbal teas, provide essential nutrients and energy while promoting gentle digestion and circulation. These nourishing meals replenish vital nutrients lost during childbirth, fortifying the body for the demands of breastfeeding and caretaking.

The first 40 days postpartum offer a profound opportunity for mothers to honor the sacred journey of childbirth and embrace the transformative power of rest and nourishment. By prioritizing rest and nourishment with warming foods, mothers can embark on a journey of self-care and renewal, laying the foundation for optimal health and vitality in the postpartum period and beyond.
