Heavy Metal and Cellular Detox

Heavy metal burden and cellular toxicity is commonly elevated in individuals today as a result of frequent exposure in our current world. Exposure, along with reduced levels of glutathione and metallothionein, can substantially impair the body’s natural ability to rid the system of these poisons. It is crucial that these are removed as much as possible prior to conception.

SHOULD I APPROACH DETOX VIA CHELATION THERAPY?

Heavy-metal chelation therapy uses chemical agents such as EDTA, DMPS or DMSA (prescribed only by a medical professional) to bond to heavy metals in the system and prepare them for excretion. This can be quite an invasive, expensive and a potentially dangerous process, so please seek advice from a qualified chelation expert before embarking on this type of intervention. Chelation therapy can also reduce beneficial elements, such as zinc, selenium, copper, magnesium and calcium, so it is imperative that a suitably qualified practitioner is consulted. Fundamental tests, such as the hair mineral analysis, urinary porphyrins and mitochondrial function from reputable laboratories may show some heavy-metal toxicity, but remember that these elevations or normal readings in both hair and urine may not represent the complete picture, as your qualified therapist will be aware.

OUR GENTLE APPROACH:

Rather than chemical chelation, we recommend a slower and much safer option called ‘clathration’, utilising the natural properties of chlorella (algae), cilantro (coriander) and alpha-lipoic acid (a natural antioxidant).

  • Chlorella is a whole food and a complete protein that binds to toxins for excretion. It also has the ability to reactivate the body’s detoxification functions as well as increasing glutathione and helping to support metallothionein production.

  • Cilantro has the effect of ‘mobilising’ heavy metal toxins, such as nickel, cadmium, aluminium, lead and mercury. It dislocates these toxic molecules from their hiding places in intracellular spaces so they can be effectively excreted (because it does this, it is important to combine its use with Chlorella vulgaris).

  • Alpha-lipoic acid is a natural antioxidant, very effective in eliminating heavy metals, with other supportive nutrients, such as vitamin C, selenium, glutathione, zinc, magnesium, calcium and cysteine.

Gut related symptoms and disturbances also create an increased source of toxins derived from the imbalanced microbes that live in the gut and increased permeability of the gut membrane. These toxins and heavy metals which pass through the gut membrane and are not removed by the liver are then circulated by the blood system and deposited in cells and tissues. These can have a dramatic and negative impact on many bodily processes including the functioning of the nervous system, reducing mitochondrial function and cellular energy production, killing neurons and disrupting brain function. It is therefore crucial that along with the above supplementation, the gut and liver are supported via lifestyle and dietary factors.

OTHER WAYS TO SUPPORT HEAVY METAL DETOXIFICATION:

  • Cut out all refined and processed foods that include refined carbohydrates, sugar, and trans fats.

  • Increase filtered water consumption to half your body weight in fluid ounces daily. If you spend time outside, work out strenuously, or live in a dry climate, you may need even more water.

  • Increase consumption of vegetables that support the liver: garlic, jerusalem artichokes, leeks, onions, brussels sprouts, broccoli, parsley, beetroot, radish, cabbage, collards, kale, dandelion, watercress, sesame seeds and walnuts.

  • Increase consumption of particular fruits such as apricot, avocado, blackberries, blueberries, pomegranates, strawberries, cranberries, lemons, papaya, pineapple, watermelon, tomatoes, tangerines, raspberries.

  • Increase consumption of foods with sulfur-containing amino acids: cysteine, methionine, and taurine. These may help detox and increase glutathione production, taurine may be supportive of bile production; alpha lipoic acid and glycine.

  • Consume dandelion tea, lemon and green tea.

  • Incorporate beneficial herbs such as blackroot, burdock, nettle to help prevent constipation, and milk thistle to stimulate gall bladder and bile flow.

  • Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory herb that stimulates bile flow and may aid in stomach acid secretions.

  • Avoid toxic chemicals in the home and environment.

  • Attain your ideal weight:  As we’ve discussed before, you don’t want to be too thin or too heavy.  Here’s another reason why—we store many toxins in fat, where they are difficult to eliminate.  Trans and hydrogenated fats are the most harmful.  Being too thin isn’t healthy either, as nutritional deficiencies severely limit our ability to clear toxins and may increase the negative effect these toxins have on our body, which has poor reserves.

  • Consider sauna therapy to promote sweating and detox.
